In today’s working world, managing any organization requires knowledge of the rules and regulations of human resource management. Ideal for anyone with management responsibilities as well as for those new to the HR field, this introductory course will cover the basics of hiring, paying, training and evaluating employees. Participants will gain a broad overview of human resource management.

Topics will include the following:

  • Employment law in the workplace
  • Effective recruiting and selection techniques
  • Basics of compensation
  • Employee orientation and training
  • Ensuring quality performance

Who should attend:

  • Managers, supervisors, office administrators, small business owners, private practitioners and those responsible for or who oversee hiring, training and evaluating employees.
  • Entry-level HR staff members or those seeking to enter the field of human resource management.
  • Specialists in one area of HR who wish to attain a better overall understanding of the field.

Instructor: Colleen Dutton, SPHR, is the director of employee relations at Rice University. She has more than 18 years of experience in marketing, administration and human resources in the public and corporate health care sector as well as in the university setting. Her HR experience includes strategic planning and performance management, employee relations, recruiting and employment, workplace violence education, work/life balance issues, policies and procedures, and dispute resolution and mediation. Ms. Dutton has been an instructor in the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies since 2004. She holds a BS in health education from Sam Houston State University.

Refunds and cancellations: No refunds will be issued on or after the date the program begins. If enrollment is canceled in writing two weeks before the program begins, a full refund will be issued less the cost of any course materials the participant has received. When enrollments are canceled in writing less than two weeks before the program begins, a refund will be issued only if a replacement can be found for you and a 20 percent processing fee and the cost of any materials the participant has received will be deducted from the refund.
