Rice University Summer School for College Students
2012 SUMMER SCHOOL ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION
Who Can Apply: The Rice University Summer School is open to:
Instructions for Current Rice Undergraduate or Graduate Students:
Any Rice undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing will automatically be accepted into the Rice Summer School program. (May Rice graduates who have not enrolled in a graduate program are considered Post-Baccalaureate applicants. Please see section on Post-baccalaureate students for more information.) A Rice student who is not in good academic standing must receive written permission from his/her academic advisor. Rice students may take a maximum of 12 hours during the summer.
Students who are placed on academic probation after Summer School begins will be allowed to take only nine hours in Summer School. Students who are placed on academic suspension after Summer School begins will be asked to withdraw. No credit will be given to students who are placed on academic suspension after Summer School begins.
Although current degree-seeking Rice students do not need to apply for admission to Summer School, they must meet the deadlines listed on the Summer School calendar. Registrations after the deadline are subject to a late fee. Students will be billed as soon as they register. Bills will be sent to the permanent address of record.
Students are strongly advised to choose courses carefully as they will not have the same ability to change courses as easily as is done during the regular school year. Refund deadlines are very short and rigid during Summer School.
Rice undergraduates do not need an RDA PIN to register for summer courses. Students will only be able to register for the number of credit hours for which they have paid.
Rice students will not have liberal add/drop abilities for summer term. Please enter CRNs carefully. If the wrong CRN is entered, students must make a trip to the Office of the Registrar to correct the registration.
Rice students who register for one course will not be able to drop it via Esther. Rice students who register for more than one course will not be able to drop the last course they registered for via Esther. A trip to the Office of the Registrar will be required.
If you receive an error which reads MAXIMUM HOURS EXCEEDED, this means either the Office of the Registrar has not yet updated your summer record or you are attempting to register for more hours than have been paid for. Please adjust to the situation accordingly.
If any problems with registration are encountered please contact the Office of the Registrar at registrar@rice.edu.
If you have any questions, please call the Summer School Office at 713-348-4803.
Instructions for Visiting Students (undergraduates and graduate students from other universities and recently graduated high school students accepted by but not matriculated into a university):

Visiting students must apply for admission, beginning with the Summer School application form. A Dean of Students Recommendation form must also be completed and mailed under separate cover.
All applicants must be in very good academic standing. Graduating high school seniors will receive consideration as long as they are in very good academic standing.
All applicants must also submit official transcripts of all course work completed through the current spring semester. (Official transcripts without spring semester grades will be accepted in order to begin your application process. Once an application is approved, students are expected to finish the spring semester courses with the same superior performance that led to their admission into the Rice Summer School.) Photocopies or faxed copies of official transcripts are not acceptable. Transcripts received after the deadline will not be accepted for consideration.
Students requesting more than eight credit hours of course work in one session must also submit a written request for approval of extra hours to the Dean of the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies.
Courses may not be taken on a pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. The summer program is not a degree-granting program and therefore not authorized to issue any forms students need to apply for visitor status, visas or visa waivers.
Application Fee: Visiting students must pay an application fee of $75 (checks payable to Rice University), which is nonrefundable unless the class is canceled by the Summer School Office. An additional nonrefundable $150 late fee must be paid if the application is submitted after the deadline. Applicants are urged to observe application deadlines.
