Why Rice’s Glasscock School?

The impetus for Rice creating what now has become the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies was born out of a need defined by engineering alumni seeking to gain new knowledge in their field--knowledge that had evolved after they completed their bachelor’s degrees. To meet this need, Rice devised and offered its first continuing studies class, “The Physics Basis of Hydrocarbon Processing at Low Temperatures.” The title lacked innovation, but the concept of offering continuing studies to “counter the current problem of professional obsolescence” was and is at the heart of why the Glasscock School exists. While our reach extends throughout the greater Houston area and beyond, that has always and will always include Rice Alumni.
