Why Rice’s Glasscock School?

The impetus for Rice creating what now has become the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies was born out of a need defined by engineering alumni seeking to gain new knowledge in their field--knowledge that had evolved after they completed their bachelor’s degrees. To meet this need, Rice devised and offered its first continuing studies class, “The Physics Basis of Hydrocarbon Processing at Low Temperatures.” The title lacked innovation, but the concept of offering continuing studies to “counter the current problem of professional obsolescence” was and is at the heart of why the Glasscock School exists. While our reach extends throughout the greater Houston area and beyond, that has always and will always include Rice Alumni.

Giving

“There may thus be realized the founder's desire that the advantages which his philanthropy would make possible should be brought within the reach of the promising student of slender means.”
—Edgar Odell Lovett

We serve an incredibly diverse body of learners, including veterans, teachers, non-profit executives, new college graduates, career changers and advancers, and English language learners. They range in age from three to their nineties, and there is not a sector of our workforce they are not impacting. For all of that diversity, they share this in common: a desire to learn and a need for access.
